Don't Miss The Rainbow

Don't Miss The Rainbow is the last of my Spintunes 4 challenge songs.  This time the challenge was to write anything we wanted- as long as we used no instrumentation that was not produced by our bodies.  Claps, snaps, clicking nails, whistles, rhythmically rubbing  a hand on the arm; vocal beat box tricks such as humming and going "tsk" were all used in my song, and all put together by my partner Ted Kiper, who added some of his as well.  The challenge of having so many tracks open as he cut and pasted and copied things to form a cohesive accompaniment almost broke both him and his computer. :o)  He pulled it together though!  It also has a nice combo of a regae beat plus a little 1950's early rock feel to it.
The song I chose is a variation of the  poem/lyrics I wrote last summer, "Don't Miss The Rainbow".  Coming out of the supermarket one day last July I stopped because it had started raining so hard I could barely see to where my car was.  It was one of those typical summer cloudbursts though- loud and hard, but I could see the light of the sun along the horizon and knew that it would soon pass.  No need to  race out to the car, get soaked, get my food wet as well.  Considering the  height of the sun, I figured there would probably be a rainbow at the end of the storm, and I was proven correct within five minutes as the rain faded to a slight drizzle.  Even so, I was content to just stand and watch the rainbow for a while, they are too beautiful and rare to rush.  I was also shaking my head at all the people who had rushed through the downpour trying to dodge the drops, and who would probably miss the rainbow as well. The line "Don't miss the rainbow because you're too busy hiding from the rain" came to mind, and when I got home I wrote down the idea and lyrics.

Move forward about 8 months, and I dusted off the piece and tried to set some music to it. No luck.  Reading it aloud didn't spark anything.  Reading it while walking my puppy muse Buddy- zip.  3 dog walks later and I still didn't have a tune!  I did have the opening number to Applause popping into my head, and then the phrase "Look at you dodging drops" appeared...by the end of the walk it was 3/4 done I think  The chorus was completely different from the original inspirational song, and when I was done with all the lyrics I went back to the Broadway song and rewrote the tune as well.  I do that a lot- a song I already know  pops into my head, I put new words to it, then go back and  put all new music to it.  Here is the final product.  I am considering submitting it to  a Christian songwriting contest, along with "My Best Friend".  You can hear this and download it for free at http://menageatune.bandcamp.com/track/dont-miss-the-rainbow

                                            Don’t Miss The Rainbow

By JoAnn Abbott and Ted Kiper

Look at you dodging drops

Trying to beat the rain

Sheltering from the storm

You want to be safe and warm

Watching the dark clouds form

Ducking your head down, and

Closing your eyes, while

You wince at the thunders roar

Water begins to pour

Feeling alone once more

But don’t miss the rainbow!

Storms always pass, soon the day will be clear

Don’t miss the rainbow!

God’s got a reason for bringing you here!

Wipe the drops from your eyes

See the light breaking through

All the colors of happiness glow-

Don’t miss the rainbow-

Because you’re too busy hiding

From the rain

Some days the sun will shine

Some days you’re feeling fine

Grey skies will come again

The sting and the chill of rain

All the harsh shades of pain

Open your eyes and know

Bad storms will always go

Red robins sing and play

Gold of a warm new day

Bright colors guide your way

Just don’t miss the rainbow!

Storms always pass, soon the day will be clear

Don’t miss the rainbow!

God’s got a reason for bringing you here!

Wipe the drops from your eyes

See the light breaking through

All the colors of happiness glow-

Don’t miss the rainbow-

Because you’re too busy hiding

From the rain

Don’t miss miss the rainbow

       Hiding from the rain

Don’t miss the rainbow

Hiding from the rain  (repeat and fade)
